Oxnard's boxing culture emerged from youth community programs in the 1970s, most notably La Colonia Youth Boxing Club, founded in 1977 by Bedford Pinkard, a former boxer and longtime recreation supervisor. The gym became a proving ground for generations of fighters, producing world champion Fernando Vargas, who competed for the United States at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and became the youngest junior middleweight champion in history at age 21 in December 1998. The Garcia family—Eduardo, Robert, and Mikey—extended the city's boxing legacy, with Robert Garcia and Mikey Garcia earning national recognition as trainer of the year and four-division world champion respectively.

Today, Oxnard is recognized nationally as a boxing destination. The city hosts the Oxnard PAL International Boxing Championships annually, drawing over 300 competitors ranging from youth ages 9 through adults, with spectators numbering in the thousands and online viewership reaching tens of thousands. Multiple professional gyms operate in the city, including the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy, attracting fighters from around the world who relocate to train in Oxnard. The city's boxing infrastructure and competitive culture have made it what some call "the Wrigley Field of boxing"—a place where the sport is woven into the community's identity.

Communities built around training, competition, and mentorship—like Oxnard's boxing world—create strong intergenerational bonds and shared commitment to young people's development. Families in these communities often think long-term about the futures they are helping to build, and life insurance is a natural part of that planning: protection for the mentors, coaches and parents whose guidance shapes the next generation.
